The ENTSO-E Secretariat in Brussels is the focal point for technical, market and policy questions for all European TSOs in their cooperation with each other, in their joint fulfillment of their legal mandates, and in the intensive interactions with European Commission, regulatory agencies, associations representing network users and other stakeholders. The role of the TSOs and their cooperation in ENTSO-E is crucial to ensuring the security of supply; completing the largest and most competitive electricity market in the world; and successfully introducing large volumes of renewable energy into the system. The scope and diversity of ENTSO-E's work has grown rapidly and is expected to grow further with the implementation of network codes and the EU’s Energy Union.

Key objectives the internship will focus on:

With the supervision of a manager:

Provide technical support for ENTSO-E internal users.
Resolve 1st Line technical issues over Zendesk ticketing, via live chat, or on-site in a friendly and professional manner
Escalade to Level 2 or Level 3 experts if necessary and make the follow up with the customer
Maintain and develop your own knowledge and skills to assist with first time fault resolution
Identify and escalate repeated issues or service risks into service management teams
Help with IT onboarding and outboarding process when required
Follow asset management process and update inventory when needed.

Requirements:

Be a current full-time student (IT field)
Be available on a full-time basis for a minimum of 6 months, ideally 1 year.
Be eligible to travel and stay in Belgium for the duration of the internship
Set up an internship agreement between the university and ENTSO-E
Provide proof of health insurance coverage by university
Be a fluent communicator in English
PowerPoint knowledge is desirable
Enjoy collaborating in an international environment
Reactive and well organised. We are looking for someone who has a problem-solving approach with ICT diagnostic, and troubleshooting skills
Nice to have, not mandatory:

Basic knowledge of hardware: notebooks, and peripherals
Basic knowledge of Microsoft 365 Cloud solution – Active Directory - Azure and MS Exchange, Windows 10/11 OS as well as iOS and Android
Basic knowledge in PowerShell command and networking (Wi-Fi, LAN)

Internship description

We are looking for a motivated student with engineering background to join the Flexibility team of the Market and Operations Section of ENTSO-E. The intern will enhance and apply her/his knowledge by contributing to the Probabilistic Risk Assessment, performing data analysis and modelling.

Your responsibilities and tasks

The chosen applicant is expected to:

Contribute to the analysis and modelling of data and power system models.
Collaborate with experts to analyse and interpret results.
Support the team in generating reports based on the collected data and analysis.
Participate in meetings and discussions to provide insights and recommendations based on the analysis and modelling results.

This is a great opportunity if you are interested in building a wide network, as the above tasks may include transversal interaction with the work of other sections, cooperation with the members of the association and support in project management.

Specific responsibilities may be finetuned together with the selected student.

Your profile

The ideal candidate is someone who developed practical curiosity, innovative thinking skills and is interested in technical matters.

Furthermore, you have the following:

Pursuing a university degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Computer sciences or a related field.
- Knowledge background in Python, MATLAB, Tableau, Power Factory, PSSE, modelling and data analytics in general.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work with large sets of data.
Previous experience in the energy sector (e.g. previous internships) and/ or demonstrated interest in the energy sector, would be considered an asset.
Ability to organize own work and establish priorities.
Excellent writing and presentation skills in English.

Internship requirements

The candidate should:

Be eligible to reside in EU (meaning EU citizen or valid residence card).
Be a full-time student. The internship must be issued by your university as part of your studies.
Have a personal (also provided by university) health insurance valid for Belgium during the period of the internship.
Sign an internship agreement with your university.
Agree on exact length of the internship and schedule (full time or part time).

ENTSO-E offers 6 months internships to motivated candidates with background in one or more of the following fields:

Data engineering
Electricity systems
Electricity market and/or network modelling

The interns will enhance and apply their knowledge to contribute to the implementation of the energy transition in Europe, especially though enhancement of data management systems, adequacy studies (Seasonal Outlooks, ERAA (European Resource Adequacy Assessment)) and long-term studies (e.g. TYNDP (Ten Year Network Development Plan)).

The internships are based in Brussels within the ENTSO-E System Development section (30 employees). Interns are fully integrated within the section and benefit from its strong team spirit. A monthly allowance of 700€ is proposed to reimburse the accommodation and commuting fees.

Requirements:

Education: preferably in electrical engineering, economics, or mathematics.
Experience in working with complex datasets and knowledge of Python, R, Excel/VBA or similar.
Knowledge of simulation and/or optimization software is a plus, ideally applied to electricity market modelling (e.g., GAMS, Plexos, Antares, BID3 or similar).
Fluent in English, including writing and presentation skills and motivation to work in a multi-cultural environment and to contribute to the European Energy Union.

Description of available study topics (non-exhaustive)

Economic Viability Assessment in ERAA

The European Resource Adequacy Assessment (ERAA) investigates whether the electricity system has sufficient resources to meet demand in the coming decade. It is built upon models and analyses on possible events which can adversely impact the balance between supply and demand of electric power. The Economic Viability Assessment (EVA) is one of the key steps within ERAA, consisting of assessing the viability of the generating units in the system. An internship position is available on the support of EVA within a dedicated taskforce for methodological developments. The student would join the expert meetings and be involved in result analysis and market modelling.

Key contributions of the student:

Assessing the quality of input data, building visualization using python, excel and Tableau;
Contributing to model building. This involves scripting to read data from the databases and importing them into the optimization software;
Supporting in modelling and simulation activities, as needed;
Disseminating individual and collective work;
Analysing and presenting results.

Flow Based implementation in ERAA

In an interconnected power system such as the European system, the scope of an adequacy study should be extended by considering the supply and demand balance under a defined network infrastructure, which can have a considerable impact on adequacy results. Two methods are used to model the network in the European Resource Adequacy Assessment: Net Transfer Capacities and Flow-based Market Coupling. The former is a simplified representation of the grid, which imposes an upper constraint on the power exchanges between two bidding zones. Flow-based modelling on the other hand offers a better way to model interconnections, providing an enhanced representation of physical constraints of the grid. Preparing FB domains requires technical knowledge on both network and market modelling. Network modelling relates to physical flows in the lines, while market considers aggregated exchanges between bidding zones.

Key contributions of the student:

Support in building the FB domains to be used for ERAA, assessing their quality by visualization and test simulations;
Contributing to market model building, relating the implementation of the FB constraints. This involves scripting to read data from the databases and importing them into the optimization software;
Supporting in modelling and simulation activities, as needed;
Disseminating individual and collective work;
Analysing and presenting results.
