Internship topic
Silicon Photonics has reached industrial maturity for Telco and Datacom applications amid dramatic demand of high bandwidth, low cost, and low power consumption optical systems for internet traffic as well as fast and efficient processors (e.g., AR, AI, cloud and data centre services, etc.). Furthermore, Silicon Photonics applicability is currently expanding to new areas such as sensing, RF photonics, reservoir computing, optical DSP, and wireless, to name a few. However, complexity and form factor of the photonic integrated circuits (PIC) are becoming higher and higher. To overcome such challenges and keep the PIC development sustainable in terms of cost and feasibility, inverse design techniques are of interest nowadays because of the dramatic form factor reduction that can be achieved, still preserving the optical performance with respect to the conventionally designed PIC components.
The target of the internship is to implement inverse design techniques using commercial software in combination with special algorithms to simulate and design an optical device among polarization splitter and rotators, WDM filters, crossings, beam splitters and combiners.
This internship will give you the opportunity to work in an international team of design, process and test experts and give you insights in our daily R&D work.

Especially the realization of chip-scale Kerr frequency combs would allow the deployment of an ultra-compact, broadband, and mass manufacturable light source in many different fields of applications.
The target of the internship is to develop a Kerr frequency comb design using an existing simulation code solving the Lugiato-Lefever master equation (LLE). The LLE has shown to give not only a good qualitative but also quantitative description on reported experimental results of the generation of microcombs. Based on your simulation results we will layout Kerr comb structures which will be later on manufactured in a Silicon foundry and finally tested and evaluated in our photonics lab.
